Oil Drilling Rig Count ReportNatural gas drilling has been the dominant energy story in the U.S. for the past few years, but oil is back with a vengeance. For the first time in 18 years, the number of oil rigs working in the U.S. has exceeded the number of natural gas rigs, covering both land and offshore rigs. By 2020 this surge in oil drilling could increase U.S. oil production by as much as 3 million barrels per day. ![]() Baker Hughes reported that the international rig count for Jan -2012 was 1,171, down 9 from the 1,180 counted in Dec 2011. The international offshore rig count for Jan 2012 was 307,up 8 from the 299 counted in Dec 2011 The US rig count for 17 Feb 2012 is 1994, up 5 units
from the 1989 counted in 10 Feb- 2012. The Canadian rig count for
Feb -2012 is 705, down 4 units from the 709 counted The Baker Hughes Rotary Rig Counts are counts of the number of drilling rigs actively exploring for or developing oil or natural gas in the United States, Canada and international markets. Baker Hughes has issued the rotary rig counts as a service to the petroleum industry since 1944, when Hughes Tool Company began weekly counts of US and Canadian drilling activity.
