South America Oil Reserves

The South American region possesses 20 percent of the world's known underground oil reserves.

According to OPEC report Venezuela has even toppled Saudi Arabia as the country with the largest proven reserves.

Petroleum assets in Latin America have been privatized as part of recent free market economic reforms. The extent of the reforms adopted has varied among countries.

For example, Argentina has completely privatized its formerly state-owned petroleum company, while Mexico (Latin America's second largest crude oil producer) has given more latitude to foreign investors in the petrochemical industry, but has still largely maintained its state-owned monopoly in petroleum.

Latin America
Although accounting for only 10 percent of the total output of oil in the world, Latin America has shown the greatest growth in production in recent years. That is in part due to the discovery of new fields as well as to privatizations of state-owned petroleum companies and the opening up of petroleum resources to foreign investment. Since 1985, production of Latin American oil has grown by 52 percent; but perhaps more importantly, exports of oil have grown nearly threefold. Latin America is expected to add roughly 1 million barrels per day of productive capacity .

In 2007, Ecuador re-joined the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), after leaving the organization at the end of 1992. Ecuador is the smallest oil producer in OPEC, with an assigned production quota of 434,000 bbl/d.

Brazil- The offshore Campos and Santos Basins, located off of the country's southeast coast, hold the vast majority of Brazil's proven reserves. In 2010, Brazil produced 2.7 million barrels per day (bbl/d) of liquids, of which 75 percent was crude oil. Most Brazilian oil is produced in the southeastern region of the country in Rio de Janeiro and Espírito Santo states. More than 90 percent Brazil's oil production is offshore in very deep water and consists of mostly heavy grades. Five fields in the Campos Basin (Marlim, Marlim Sul, Marlim Leste, Roncador, and Barracuda) account for more than half of Brazil's crude oil production.

In June 2010, Colombia conducted its latest oil sector bidding round, which included 228 exploratory blocks. The round featured both known hydrocarbon-rich areas as well as frontier regions, such as offshore blocks in the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean. However, the ANH only awarded 76 total licenses in well-established areas in the round.

Venezuela is one of the world's largest exporters of crude oil and the largest in the Western Hemisphere. The oil sector is of central importance to the Venezuelan economy. As a founding member of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), Venezuela is an important player in the global oil market. June-30 2011- President Hugo Chavez said that Venezuela's oil production quota within OPEC should increase now that its proven crude reserves have grown.OPEC recognized Venezuela as the country with the biggest proven oil reserves in the world, saying that with 296.5 billion barrels it now surpasses Saudi Arabia.

Mexico: The third-largest supplier of foreign oil to the United States, Mexico could lose it capacity to export the commodity within a decade. Its proven reserves have declined over the last 15 years and production by the national oil company is down 25 percent since its peak in 2004. But the country still has 4 percent of the region's oil thanks to the Paleocanal Chicontepec oilfield, estimated to hold more than 15 billion barrels of heavy oil. But the oil is "trapped in vast numbers of small, unconnected pools

Cantarell Field or Cantarell Complex is an aging supergiant oil field in Mexico. It was discovered in 1976 by a fisherman, Rudesindo Cantarell. However, production has declined since 2003, falling to 464,000 barrels per day by the end of 2010. Cantarell Field is Mexico's second most productive oil field after Ku-Maloob-Zaap. Cantarell is located 80 kilometres offshore in the Bay of Campeche. This complex comprises four major fields: Akal (by far the largest), Nohoch, Chac and Kutz.

Akal field, is considered the sixth largest reservoir in the world. Since Cantarell's initial discovery in 1976 and exploitation in 1979

The Cantarell Complex of five oil fields lies beneath the Bay of Campeche. It is the second most productive oil field in the world, supplying about two thirds of Mexico's crude oil output.

Noxal oil field is a deep underwater oil field in the Mexican waters of the Gulf of Mexico that was once believed to contain up to 10 billion barrels of crude oil. Further drilling has revealed a modest 245 billion cubic feet a modest natural gas find.

Ku-Maloob-Zaap oil field is the most productive oil field in Mexico. Ku-Maloob-Zaap is made up out of three relatively large fields Ku, Maloob and Zaap which are located to the immediate northwest of the Cantarell field. Ku-Maloob-Zaap is located offshore in the Bay of Campeche, 105 kilometres from Ciudad del Carmen. The Ku field was discovered in 1980, the Maloob field in 1984 and Zaap in 1991. First oil from the Ku field was produced in 1981.

Bay of Campeche - Major offshore oil wells were drilled in the bay during the 1970s, and it became the highest oil-producing region in Mexico in the early 1980s. Bay of Campeche, also called Gulf of Campeche, Spanish Bahía de Campeche, bay of the Gulf of Mexico, southern Mexico. An oil pipeline connects the bay area to Coatzacoalcos on the coast near the city of Minatitlán, where there are pipeline connections and a tanker terminal.
